One of my favorite things about travelling is exploring food and culinary traditions. When I travelled through Asia – and I’ve been to quite a few places due to their proximity to Australia — I was always interested in their breakfast options. Even at hotels where the buffet breakfast would offer many Western options, I would always gravitate towards the local cuisine corner of the spread.
In Thailand, I lived on their crispy omelettes with chicken rice or sticky mango rice; in Japan, I loved on-the-go onigiri and — perhaps not to everyone’s taste – their simple yet nourishing breakfasts of rice, fish, pickles, and miso. In Hong Kong, I enjoyed congee with delicious toppings.
Unlike the familiar breakfast plates of bacon and eggs or bagel sandwiches common in the Western world, Asian families and commuters enjoy savory porridges, nourishing soups, and dishes traditionally reserved for lunch or dinner.
I thought it would be fun to share some of these Asian breakfast ideas from various regions. These are especially good to save for when you just need something new. Cooking ruts aren’t unusual, but I see people get stuck with breakfast the most because let’s face it: oats and eggs can get boring. Let’s think outside of the box.
Asian Breakfast Ideas
In this recipe roundup, I’m sharing with you the full spectrum of morning fare — savory and sweet — from various Asian countries, highlighting unique dishes found on tables from Japan to India and everywhere in between. Throughout Asia, each country has its own method of making omelets and its own take on pancakes. Regional differences determine those “secret” ingredients most of the time.
