I’ve been making this avocado cottage cheese toast on repeat lately—it’s one of those throw-together meals that somehow feels a little fancy. The creamy avocado and cool, savory cottage cheese are a dream together, and when you add the crunchy, oniony, and garlicky Everything But The Bagel seasoning and sweet cherry tomatoes, it’s such a good combo!

I love using high-protein cottage cheese to bump up the nutrition — it’s surprisingly filling! Each serving comes at about 340 cals and 14-15 grams protein. You can serve this as-is or make it heartier with a boiled or fried egg or some smoked salmon on the side. I’ve even done a spicy version with hot honey. Trust me, worth it.

What You’ll Need

Here is what you’ll need for this cottage cheese and avocado toast. Find the full measurements in the recipe card below.

  • Sourdough bread – sturdy and chewy, perfect base; swap with rye or whole grain, and feel free to use gluten-free bread here.
  • Salted butter – adds richness; use olive oil or skip if you’re going lighter.
  • Avocado – creamy and nutty.
  • Cottage cheese – high-protein and savory; smooth or curd-style both work.
  • Everything But The Bagel seasoning (EBTB) – salty, crunchy, oniony, and garlicky magic; make your own if needed (see notes in the recipe card).
  • Cherry tomatoes – sweet and juicy; grape tomatoes or diced regular ones are great too. I’ve used both.
  • Chives or green onions – fresh and mild; adds just the right finish. You can also try basil or cilantro (coriander), or dill here.
  • Cracked black pepper – a final peppery bite.

Recipe Tips

  • If your EBTB seasoning isn’t salted, add a pinch of sea salt at the end.
  • For extra protein, add a poached or fried egg.
  • Smoked salmon or turkey slices turn this into a proper brunch.
  • Like it spicy? A drizzle of hot honey is delish!
  • Don’t skip the chives—they bring everything together. Green onions and even thinly sliced red onions will do the trick.
  • Storage Tips: Best enjoyed fresh, but you can keep the components (especially avocado and cottage cheese) in separate containers for up to 2 days.

Avocado toast, but better. This version layers cottage cheese, juicy cherry tomatoes, and that magical Everything But The Bagel seasoning on buttery sourdough. Heaven. Find step-by-step photos and more recipe tips above.

Video

Ingredients

  • 2 slices sourdough bread 2.5 oz / 50–60 grams each
  • 1–2 teaspoons salted butter
  • ½–⅔ large avocado sliced (about ¼ per toast)
  • 4 oz cottage cheese about 110 grams, I used Aldi’s high-protein cottage cheese here.
  • 2 teaspoons Everything But The Bagel EBTB seasoning, see note
  • 8 cherry tomatoes sliced
  • 1 tablespoon chopped chives or green onions
  • Cracked black pepper
  • Optional: sea salt if your EBTB isn’t salted

Instructions

  • Toast the sourdough and spread butter over it while still hot.
  • Top each slice with ¼ to ⅓ of the avocado, sliced evenly.
  • Spoon about 2–3 tablespoons of cottage cheese (around 55 grams / 2 oz) on each toast.
  • Sprinkle with ½ teaspoon EBTB seasoning, then add chives and cherry tomatoes.
  • Finish with another pinch of EBTB, extra chives, and cracked pepper.
  • If your EBTB isn’t salted, finish with a small pinch of sea salt.

Notes

Everything But The Bagel seasoning usually contains black and white sesame seeds, salt, granulated onion powder, and garlic powder. If the seasoning isn’t salted, add some sea salt. You can make your own EBTB seasoning with those ingredients, which you might have in the pantry.
Can I use ricotta instead of cottage cheese?
Sure! Ricotta will be slightly sweeter and creamier but still delish; note that ricotta has less protein than cottage cheese.
Storage Tips: Best enjoyed fresh, but you can keep the components (especially avocado and cottage cheese) in separate containers for up to 2 days.

This toast really does feel fancy, but I loooove anything with cottage cheese. This is my new go-to post-gym meal (and lots of hot sauce).

Made it twice this week!!! Not usually a fan of cottage cheese kind of on its own (more in baking or in sauces) but this was such a great combo of flavors and textures. Everything but the bagel seasoning was the key, I agree.
