What Is Bang Bang Sauce?
Bang Bang sauce is a creamy, spicy, tangy and sweet sauce commonly used in American-Chinese cuisine but has roots in other Asian culinary traditions. The sauce typically combines mayonnaise, sweet chili sauce, and sriracha or hot sauce. Some versions also incorporate ingredients like honey, vinegar, soy sauce or lime juice to enhance its complexity.
This sauce is versatile and often served as a dipping sauce for shrimp or other seafood, fried or grilled chicken, or vegetables. It’s also popular as a dressing for salads or bowls (hello, poke bowl!), or drizzled over tacos and wraps to add a zesty, creamy element. I love it on my bang bang chicken skewers. The name “Bang Bang” likely refers to the bold impact of its flavors, delivering a lively punch with each bite.
I often make a batch of bang bang sauce for the fridge and use it throughout the week. Give it a go and let me know what you think!
What You’ll Need
Here are the key ingredients for bang bang sauce recipe. Find the full measurements in the recipe card below.
- Mayonnaise – choose whole egg mayo that’s not too sweet as we’ll be adding a few sweet ingredients and it can get too much.
- Sweet chili sauce – I like Thai sweet chili sauce as it has a more aromatic flavor but you can use any type.
- Sriracha sauce – one of my favorite Asian ingredients, Sriracha sauce is a mild hot sauce that’s very flavorful; if you can’t get Sriracha, use regular hot sauce and add ½ clove of minced garlic.
- Honey – this will add extra sweetness, almost caramel-y flavor to the sauce.
- Soy sauce – you can use regular, Tamari or coconut aminos; this will add a touch of salt and umami to the sauce.
- Lime juice – every creamy sauce needs a touch of acidity in my opinion and lime juice is perfect; you can also use lemon juice or rice vinegar here.

- Transfer the sauce to a jar or airtight container. Refrigerate the bang bang sauce for at least 30 minutes before using it to allow the flavors to meld together.
Recipe Tips
- Adjust the seasonings according to your taste preferences. If you prefer a spicier sauce, you can increase the amount of Sriracha sauce or add a pinch of cayenne pepper. To make it a bit tangier, you can add a splash of rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar. Experiment with different variations by adding minced garlic, grated ginger, or chopped cilantro for additional flavor.
- The sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. The sauce will thicken slightly as it chills in the refrigerator.
- For a smoother consistency, you can use a blender or food processor to mix the ingredients.
