This is one of those recipes that just works every single time. The combination of cocoa powder and chocolate pudding mix gives you that deep chocolate flavor and a super smooth texture (honestly, that pudding mix is doing some heavy lifting here).
What I love most is how close it gets to a proper scoop shop texture—creamy, not icy, and just rich enough without feeling too heavy. The chopped chocolate at the end is the little bonus that makes it feel a bit special, like you didn’t just make it at home in your kitchen.
It’s also a great beginner Ninja Creami recipe because it’s simple, reliable, and very forgiving. If your first spin looks crumbly (totally normal), a quick re-spin fixes everything.

What You’ll Need
Here is what you’ll need for this Ninja Creami chocolate ice cream. Find the full measurements in the recipe card below.
- Whole milk – keeps things smooth and light enough to spin well
- Heavy cream – adds richness and that classic creamy mouthfeel
- Unsweetened cocoa powder – gives that deep chocolate base
- Instant chocolate pudding mix – helps thicken and smooth everything out
- Granulated sugar – balances the cocoa bitterness
- Vanilla extract – rounds everything out
- Salt – small but important, it sharpens the chocolate flavor (don’t skip!)
- Chopped chocolate – mix-in, adds texture and those little chocolate bursts
💡 Tip: Using good-quality cocoa powder makes a noticeable difference. If you have Dutch-process, use it—it gives a darker, richer result.

Recipe Tips
- Let the pint sit out for 3–5 minutes before spinning—it helps with texture
- Don’t panic if it looks powdery after the first spin—that’s normal
- Chop your chocolate small so it distributes evenly
- Taste after spinning—sometimes I add a pinch of salt on top before serving
- Storage Tips: Store flat in the Creami container with lid. Re-spin before serving again for best texture
- Make-Ahead Tip: You can prep a few pints at once and freeze them—future you will be very grateful
Variations
- Double Chocolate: Add extra chocolate chips or chunks for a more indulgent version
- Chocolate Peanut Butter: Swirl in 2 tablespoons peanut butter after spinning
- Chocolate Brownie: Mix in brownie chunks for a dessert-style upgrade
- Chocolate Almond: Add chopped toasted almonds for crunch
Serving Suggestions
I usually go simple, just a bowl and a spoon while standing in the kitchen (no regrets). But if you’re feeling a bit fancy, this is amazing in a waffle cone, topped with whipped cream, or even layered into a sundae with caramel or nuts.
It also pairs really well with warm desserts—think brownies or cookies straight from the oven. That hot-and-cold combo never gets old.

Notes
- Make it lighter: use lower-fat milk and half-and-half or light cream.
- Why is my ice cream crumbly after spinning? Totally normal. Just add a splash of milk and re-spin—it smooths out quickly.
- Can I use chocolate chips instead of chopped chocolate? Yes! Mini chips work best because they mix through evenly.
- Can I make this dairy-free? You can swap in dairy-free milk and cream, but the texture may be slightly less creamy.
- How do I make it more chocolatey? Add extra cocoa powder or a handful of chocolate chips on top before serving.
- Let the pint sit out for 3–5 minutes before spinning—it helps with texture
- Chop your chocolate small so it distributes evenly
- Taste after spinning—sometimes I add a pinch of salt on top before serving

Very creamy and easy to make. I want to try this with low-fat milk, will it work just as well? Thanks
Yes, it will be slightly less creamy but just as delicious.
