If you own a Ninja Creami, this protein ice cream is your permanent replacement to super expensive store-bought versions. The texture is genuinely creamy (not icy, not weirdly fluffy), and the flavor is simple but solid—like a proper vanilla ice cream, just lighter.

The combination of milk and a little half-and-half (or light pouring cream) gives it that richness, while the protein powder keeps it satisfying enough to double as a snack or post-workout treat. The small addition of pudding mix is one of those quiet little tricks that makes a big difference—it smooths everything out and helps avoid that icy texture that protein ice creams are known for.

What I like most is how flexible it is. You can keep it classic vanilla or turn it into something completely different, depending on what you mix in at the end. It’s also a great option if you’re trying to bump up protein without feeling like you’re eating “diet food.”

What You’ll Need

Here is what you’ll need for this Ninja Creami protein ice cream. Find the full measurements in the recipe card below.

  • Milk (2%, whole, or Fairlife) – The foundation. Fairlife or another high-protein milk brand (we have a couple in Australia now) is great here because it makes things extra creamy while boosting protein.
  • Half and half – Adds richness and helps mimic traditional ice cream texture. In Australia/UK, go for light pouring cream.
  • Vanilla protein powder – The protein boost. Whey-casein blends tend to give the best texture.
  • Vanilla pudding mix (optional) – This is the secret weapon for creaminess. Helps prevent that icy finish. You only need about a tablespoon.
  • Maple syrup, honey, or sweetener – Adjust to taste depending on your protein powder. You can use stevia or monk fruit sweetener as well.
  • Vanilla extract – Deepens that classic vanilla flavor.
  • Pinch of salt – Tiny but important. It brings everything together (one of those simple flavor boosters that makes a difference).

Optional Swaps

  • Dairy-free milk + plant protein for a dairy-free version.
  • Greek yogurt or cream cheese instead of pudding mix for texture.

Recipe Tips

  • Let it sit for 5 minutes before spinning – This helps the blade work more evenly.
  • Always re-spin if crumbly – It’s normal, not a fail. Just add milk and go again.
  • Use better milk = better texture – Higher protein milk = creamier result.
  • Don’t skip the salt – It quietly boosts flavor without making it salty.
  • Storage: Keep frozen in the pint with a flat surface. Re-spin before serving again.
  • Make-ahead: Prep multiple pints at once so you’ve always got one ready.

Variations (Protein Ice Cream Ideas)

  • Chocolate Vanilla Swirl – Add chocolate syrup after spinning and lightly mix
  • Birthday Cake – Stir in sprinkles + a drop of almond extract
  • Berry Vanilla – Mix in strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries
  • Peanut Butter Vanilla – Swirl in peanut butter after spinning
  • Cookies & Cream – Add crushed cookies on Mix-In mode
  • Mocha – Add a teaspoon of instant coffee to the base

Serving Suggestions

I usually eat this straight out of the pint (no shame), but if you want to dress it up a bit, it’s really good with fresh berries, a drizzle of nut butter, or even a sprinkle of granola for crunch.

It also works well as a base for a quick dessert bowl—think sliced banana, dark chocolate chips, and a little honey on top. Simple, but it hits.

This Ninja Creami protein ice cream is thick, creamy, and surprisingly indulgent for a healthy dessert. It’s an easy ice cream recipe you’ll keep coming back to. Find step-by-step photos and more recipe tips above. Serves 2-3, but I calculate nutrition based on 2 servings and whole milk (not high-protein milk)

Ingredients

  • 8 oz milk (2%, whole, or Fairlife) 240 ml
  • 4 oz half and half 120 ml
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder approx. 30 grams
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla pudding mix (optional) 8 grams
  • 1–2 tablespoons maple syrup, honey, or sweetener 15–30 ml
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 2.5 ml
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until completely smooth.
  • Pour the mixture into a Ninja Creami pint container and freeze flat until solid (8–24 hours).
  • Place the frozen pint into the Ninja Creami and spin on Lite Ice Cream.
  • If the texture looks crumbly, add 1–2 tablespoons milk and spin again using Re-Spin.
  • Repeat if needed until smooth and creamy.
  • Scoop and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Nutrition note: Serves 2-3, but I calculate nutrition based on 2 servings and whole milk (not high-protein milk).
  • Why is my protein ice cream crumbly? Totally normal. Protein freezes harder than traditional ice cream. A quick re-spin with a splash of milk fixes it.
  • Can I skip the pudding mix? Yes, but the texture may be a bit icier. Greek yogurt or cream cheese can help instead.
  • What protein powder works best? Whey isolate or whey-casein blends give the smoothest, creamiest result.
  • Can I make it dairy-free? Yes—use almond or oat milk and a plant-based protein powder. Texture may be slightly less creamy.
  • How do I make it sweeter? Taste your base before freezing and adjust. Protein powders vary a lot in sweetness.
  • Let it sit for 5 minutes before spinning – This helps the blade work more evenly.
