I love food in small packages – it’s cute and always tastes really good. I think it’s because the flavours and textures of the ingredients are already perfectly combined in each mouthful. Today’s sweet potato and beef sliders are a paleo-friendly version of the regular burger bun sliders that are so popular at cocktail parties. But who says you need a cocktail party to enjoy these? Make a bunch for dinner or a weekend picnic.
Before we get to the recipe, I need to credit its rightful owner Caralee Caldwell. I found this recipe in her book Real Food Pledge, which is full of delicious paleo-friendly recipes for both savoury dishes, snacks and treats.
Caralee doesn’t label her food philosophy as paleo, which I like, but her recipes are totally paleo compliant so it’s a great one to add to your collection. You can find more great recipes on her website Real Food Pledge.

Ingredients
- 2 large sweet potatoes 16 slices
- 300 grams beef mince
- 1 handful of fresh coriander
- 1 clove garlic crushed
- 1/2 small onion diced
- Pinch of salt and pepper
- 1 avocado sliced
- 2 tomatoes sliced
- 4 cherry tomatoes halved
- 3 lettuce leaves
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees celsius and line a baking tray with baking paper. Peel the sweet potato and slice rounds of approximately 4 to 5-mm thick.
- Place rounds on baking tray and spray with olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt. Bake until golden brown and cooked through, which will take around 15–20 minutes.
- To make the mini beef burgers, place the mince in a large bowl with the crushed garlic, diced onion, fresh coriander and some salt and pepper to taste. With your hands or a fork, combine the ingredients, then press the meat mixture into 8 patties.
- Heat a large pan over a medium heat and grease with a teaspoon of coconut oil. Place the patties in the pan and cook until golden brown on each side.
- Slice the avocado and tomato and cut the lettuce to the right size. Assemble the sliders and hold together with skewers.
Nutrition
You can try a variation by using patties with different herbs and spices or some grilled Portobello mushrooms instead of sweet potato disks. For a vegetarian version, you can use grilled mushrooms and even some grilled hallumi cheese instead of beef patties. You can spice it up with some hot mustard or horseradish cream, pickles, or pesto.
